Welcome to Kids Money Queensland

When my husband and I returned from our honeymoon in 1983, all we had was $40, that we found when we opened a wedding card, and a deposit on a block of land, to our names.

Luckily, we both had jobs to return to, and a bit of common sense. I had an interest in commerce, and a job at an insurance company. Somehow I knew that it was a good idea to save something from each pay packet, and luckily the company had a superannuation scheme.

What I had learned about money from my parents was that it ‘doesn’t grow on trees’, and that life is a struggle when there’s not much of it around. Mum and Dad did a great job of raising their family, and making sure we had the basics. There wasn’t enough for many extras, but they worked extra hours, and went without themselves, for the special things we wanted from time to time like school camp. They retired to the age pension with not much to show for years of hard work.

The disciplined saving, and the superannuation that was started so long ago, has meant that my husband and I are quite comfortable now. We own our house, and have some assets to fall back on.

Things have not always gone to plan. We tried to have children early in our marriage without success. We spent a lot of money on various ‘cures’ including IVF. We gave up and moved from Sydney to Cairns to start a new life here.

In 1998, I decided to become a financial planner. I wanted to be able to share some of what I had learned about money by chance and also to learn how to make the most of our financial resources and guide others to do the same.

In 2005, we were blessed with a natural pregnancy and our beautiful daughter Lucy. She is so very special to us, and I know we could give her everything and more, but we don’t want her to take our good fortune for granted.

Kids Money has the resources we need to give her a good start on understanding money.

I decided that this was so important for all parents, that I became a licensee. I really look forward to helping you teach your children about money from an early age.

Warmest regards,

Leanda
